Calculate the Making Charge
This estimates the making charge only — not wastage, GST or a final bill.
What Is a Making Charge?
A making charge is what a jeweller charges for the labour and craftsmanship of turning raw gold or silver into a finished piece of jewellery. It is added on top of the metal value and is separate from wastage, which covers metal lost during crafting.
How This Calculator Works
Metal value is your weight multiplied by the rate for the purity you pick. The making charge is then worked out on top of that — as a percentage of the metal value, a fixed rupee amount, or a rate per gram — and shown on its own, along with what it works out to per gram and as a percentage of the metal value.
Percentage vs Fixed vs Per Gram
A percentage making charge scales with the metal value, so it rises and falls with the rate. A fixed charge is a single amount regardless of weight. A per-gram charge scales with weight but not with the metal rate. Jewellers use different methods depending on the design and metal.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the making charge calculated on the metal value or the final bill?
- A percentage making charge is always calculated on the metal value alone — not on wastage, GST or any other addition your jeweller may apply afterwards.
- Which making charge type should I choose?
- Use the type your jeweller actually quotes — percentage, fixed, or per gram. If you are unsure, ask the jeweller to state it clearly on the bill so you can compare it here.
- Does this calculator include wastage charges or GST?
- No, this tool focuses only on the making charge itself. For a full estimate that also includes wastage and GST, use the gold or silver jewellery calculator linked below.
- What does "making charge per gram" mean if I entered a percentage or fixed amount?
- It is the same total making charge divided by the weight, so you can compare a percentage or fixed quote against a jeweller who quotes a per-gram rate instead.
- Are the rates used here live market rates?
- No, rates on this site are manually maintained reference values, not live market data. Use them for estimation only and confirm the exact rate with your jeweller.
