What Does Gold Karat Mean?
Karat measures how much of a gold item is pure gold out of 24 parts. 24K means all 24 parts are gold; 22K means 22 of the 24 parts are gold and the rest is other metals mixed in for strength. Karat is used mainly for gold — silver purity is described differently, using fineness.
What Is 916 Gold?
"916 gold" is another way of writing 22K gold's fineness — 916 parts pure gold out of 1,000, or 91.6%. Indian hallmarked jewellery is often labelled this way, so 916 and 22K refer to the exact same purity.
What Is Fineness?
Fineness expresses purity as parts per 1,000 rather than parts per 24. 999 fineness means 999 parts pure metal out of 1,000; 925 fineness means 925 parts out of 1,000. It is the standard way silver purity is described, and is also used for gold alongside karat.
Karat vs Fineness vs Purity Percentage
These three are just different ways of writing the same purity. 22K, 916 fineness and 91.6% purity all describe identical gold. Karat is out of 24, fineness is out of 1,000, and purity percentage is out of 100 — pick whichever unit your jeweller, bill or hallmark uses.
999 vs 925 Silver
999 silver is 99.9% pure and is mainly used for coins and bars. 925 silver, also called sterling silver, is 92.5% pure with the remainder alloyed for durability, and is the more common standard for silver jewellery.
